Hurricane Carla 1961 and Alicia 1983

Two significant hurricanes along the Texas Coast were Hurricane Carla in 1961 and Hurricane Alicia 1983. Both hurricanes made an significant impact on the Houston/Galveston area.

Figure 16a shows the track of Carla. Figure 16b shows a depiction of the windspeeds and wind directions around Carla.

Figure 17a shows the track of Alicia. Figure 17b gives the windfield around Alicia. Notice the how much smaller Alicia was than Carla. Because of the Houston area population growth between 1961 and 1983, however, the damage estimate (adjusted for inflation) for Alicia was greater than Carla by more than 25%.
