TIRED OF A WRONG WEATHER FORECAST?
THEN COME BEAT THE WEATHERMEN!
HOUSTON - If you're tired of the weatherman being wrong - especially when it rains and you have no protection, now you have a chance to get even with the meteorologist of your choice. The Weatherman's Classic will be the means to come out and beat the weathermen on the golf course. Proceeds from this golf tournament will be used for the Weather Museum and Education Center. The tournament will be held Monday, April 15, 1996, at the Willowisp Country Club, Fondren at Main, in Missouri City.
Those weather prognosticators slated to compete include:
• Frank Billingsley, KPRC/Channel 2
• Doug Brown, KTRK/Channel 13
• Dave Dickson, KRIV/Channel 26
• Dr. Neil Frank, KHOU/Channel 11
• Dr. John Freeman, Weather Research Center
• Gene Norman, KTRK/Channel 13
• Bill Read, Houston/Galveston office, National Weather Service
• Robert Smith, KRIV/Channel 26
"We thought having a bunch of weathermen playing golf would be a great way to raise money for the Weather Museum and Education Center," said Jill Hasling, Weather Research Center Director. "It also gives the public an opportunity to come out and beat the weathermen," she added.
The Center needs to raise $105,000 to purchase a building that will then be renovated into the museum and education center. A $50,000 challenge grant was given by Houston Endowment, Inc. With $35,000 already received in donations and pledges, the Center must raise the remaining $20,000 by June 1.
The idea for the Weather Museum and Education Center came about as meteorologists began giving an increasing amount of tours. "With a lot of people interested in the weather and how it works, we thought it would be a good idea to have a place that would be accessible to everyone with walk-through exhibits to help answer questions," said Hasling. Hundreds of persons ranging from school students to senior citizens have visited the Weather Research Center during the past year. The Weather Museum and Education Center would also be used to house the summer Weather Camp, a place where school children learn more about the weather. Some of the improvements that are needed include installing an elevator and making the learning center handicap accessible. "With the funds raised, this facility will be accessible to everyone," said Hasling.
