Very Hot Temperatures Unusual for Upper Texas Coast.
Houston - "This late season heat wave makes recovering from the recent hurricanes almost unbearable", states Certified Consulting Meteorologist, Jill F. Hasling of Houston Weather Research Center. Upon reviewing temperature records only two other years did Houston see 100 degree temperatures after September 15th were September 17, 1995 and September 19, 1956. According to the records back to 1879, this is the latest 100 degree temperatures have been felt in the Houston area. Houston has seen highs at 100 degrees on September 21, September 22 and again on September 27th.
Hopefully relief will come soon as a cold front pushes toward the Texas Coast tomorrow. For the citizens without electricity these temperatures can be very dangerous. According to Ms. Hasling, this is the latest heat wave in the Houston temperature records. Below are tables giving the number of days each month since 1948 the maximum temperatures were greater than 95 degrees and the dates when temperatures were 100 degrees are more in the Houston area. As you can see below since 1948 there have only been 6 other years that had over 6 days with maximum temperatures over 95 degrees.

Weather Research Center was founded in 1987 by Jill F. Hasling and her father, Dr. John C. Freeman, both Certified Consulting Meteorologists and Fellows of the American Meteorological Society. Weather Research Center is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation and was founded to respond to a need to educate the public about weather and weather safety. WRC is the successor organization to the Institute of Storm Research founded in 1966 at the University of St. Thomas.
Freeman and Hasling’s groundbreaking research in orbital influences on the atmosphere, long range predication, marine and tropical weather forecasting for the community and the corporate clients provides the WRC with the solid experience for its operations.
Current Activities
Since WRC inception in December 1987, WRC meteorologists have served over 500,000 people in the regional and national community . The Center’s activities are focused on: 1) education of newly graduated meteorologists in corporate, global marine and tropical weather forecasting, 2) outreach/community education programs for school children and adults, and 3) weather research.
