THE 2005 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON GETS AN ACTIVE START!

Houston - "This is the first Atlantic Hurricane Season since 1871 where there have been four named storms before July 6th", according to Certified Consulting Meteorologist – Jill F. Hasling of Weather Research Center. So far we have had four tropical cyclones;

Tropical Storm Arlene – June 8-13 Florida

Tropical Storm Bret - June 28-30 Mexico

Tropical Storm Cindy - July 3-7 Louisiana

Hurricane Dennis - July 5 - ?

Prior to this year the last time there were four storms before July 6th was 1959:

Tropical Storm Arlene - May 28- June 2 Louisiana

Tropical Storm Beulah - June 15- 21 Mexico

Hurricane Unnamed - June 17-21 Atlantic

Hurricane Cindy - July 5 – 12 South Carolina

In 1968, there were three storms in June.

Hurricane Abby - June 1- 13 Florida

Hurricane Brenda - June 17-26 Florida

Tropical Storm Cindy - June 22-26 Texas

Other years when there were three storms prior to July 6th were 1936, 1901 and 1886.

Since 1871, there have been 21 years when there were 3 or more tropical cyclones [Tropical Storm or Hurricane] in June and July. Thirteen of these 21 years had more than ten storms during the Atlantic season. Four of 21 years had less than ten storms for the season.

There have been 41 years since 1871 where there have been more than 10 storms in the season and six of these years had more than 15 storms in the season [1887, 1933,1936, 1969, 1995, 2003].
