The Weather Hero Awards are given to individuals or groups who have demonstrated heroic qualities in the education of others in the fields of science or math, volunteer efforts in the meteorological community or assistance to others during a weather crisis.

The 2011 Weather Heroes include the American Red Cross; John Nielsen-Gammon, Texas State Climatologist; Cecilia Sinclair; and Jim Stefkovich, Birmingham National Weather Service Office.

Since 2011 was host to a large number of severe weather events, The Weather Museum will also recognize a handful of groups or organizations who played an important role during or after some of this year’s major weather events, including Hurricane Irene, the Mississippi River / Tennessee floods, Texas wildfires and numerous tornado outbreaks, presenting them with a special community weather recognition award.

Honorary event chairs are Dr. Kenneth and June Mattox.

The History of Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day has been celebrated every February 2 since 1887. Traditionally, after a long winter’s sleep, the groundhog comes out of its hole to search for its shadow. If the groundhog sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter are expected. The theory is the sunny days in winter are the result of cold, dry arctic air masses, which indicate that more cold weather should be expected. However, cloudy winter days come from mild, moist tropical air, which means that spring is just around the corner.
